My photographic journey has continued for more than 50 years and with all sorts of processes and formats. The camera is only a tool, as the brush is to the painter, and can only be mastered with a lot of practice and dedication. I have always been interested by the science of the photographic art and how it influences one’s vision and how we look, feel and comprehend what we see. The science carried on even when I left the darkroom and started to work in the light room. Going digital allowed me new methods of expression and experimentation. I like to work in series because a group of images expressed my feelings more than just the one.
Other Side of Reflection: This series started when I was photographing shallow stream beds. I noted the way the water surface rippled and by adjusting color, tonality and dynamic range the image started to look like an impressionist painting. I don’t think I have been influenced by other photographers but rather the old painting masters. By combining the acuity of the photograph with the sensibility, texture and color of the impressionist a unique visual experience is achieved. All of the photographs presented are made with multiple images so as to increase the dynamic range, focus and visual gamut. I try to find the balance between the science and the craft - I can only hope I have given credit to the impressionistic art.
Flores Continui: Nature has always supplied inspiration to all who can see it. I can’t help but to always look for patterns when composing florally, and the patterns are everywhere - you just have to find them. Again, with this series, multiple captures are used to develop the final composition. The negative space beyond the flower is filled with the similar floral shapes, texture and color to extend the pattern to the entire picture.
