Japanese Mixed Media Collage with Julie Zahn
Learn traditional Japanese techniques to create your own collages, using paper, pigment and glue in new ways, and bird imagery as a springboard. We will use Japanese stencil dyeing (katazome) as a unique way to prepare patterned papers. Other topics include stretching paper, making “gojiru” a soy-based binder for pigments, preparing wheat starch paste (glue) and several collage application techniques. The $30 materials fee will cover all supplies needed for this engaging and informative workshop!

Julie Zahn is a painter and printmaker. She employs oil, watercolor, collage and the Japanese stencil method of Katazome in her mixed media works. Creating a lush world of gardens and landscapes under moonlight and sunshine, in summer and winter, her work celebrates the richness and beauty of life itself. Her work was recently on view in the Cerulean Arts exhibition, Juxtaposed, September 1 – 23, 2018.
