Learn to use watercolor, India ink and gouache in combination to create dramatic paintings from your own photographs.  Step-by-step instruction will cover strategies for developing a drawing from photo references, layering ink, watercolor and gouache and incorporating drawing media.

Learning Objectives

  • Learn the traditional elements of the artist's preparatory process and how to apply them to your painting
  • Learn to layer India ink and watercolor in your painting to achieve rich, dark transparent tonalities
  • Learn to use gouache in your watercolor painting for create translucent and opaque tones and highlights
  • Learn to incorporate dry media including charcoal, chalk and pastel in your watercolor painting for definition and accents

Michael Kowbuz is co-proprietor of Cerulean Arts Galley and Studio.  He holds an MFA from PAFA and an MA in Community College Teaching from Northern Michigan University.  He held the position of Director of Continuing Education Programs at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts for 16 years.  He makes drawings, paintings and prints and has exhibited both regionally and nationally. His work is about looking at filtered images of the world, whether via reflections, photographs or the fog of memory.
