Painting & Ephemera Workshop with Philippa Beardsley
Reboot your painting practice by incorporating unexpected materials that you wouldn't normally compose a painting with - grocery lists, diary pages, junk mail, things in the street such as a flattened pencil or chunk of sanding belt, or something that you don’t really know what it is but the shape or material interests you. Learn practical methods to incorporate these materials into a cohesive painted surface, as well as strategies for defeating artist's block so you can start and move a painting(s) forward. Question stereotypical notions of what paintings are and how to make them in order to realize your personal vision and practice.

Philippa Beardsley lives, works, and paints in Philadelphia. Originally from New
Jersey, she came here for school and has been here ever since. She has a BFA in
painting from the University of the Arts, and a MFA from PAFA. Beardsley was recently included in the Cerulean Arts exhibition Depths of Mind and Memory.
I like to work on many paintings at once. A goal for me is to have them work together as a group and also be able to stand alone as a single painting. I like to make arrangements with them. Similar to tarot cards in that arrangements may change and exist in many ways. The painting begins in the construction of the wood panels or cigar boxes and other box like objects I take apart and turn into painting surfaces. I use mostly acrylic paint and other mixed materials. My paintings develop in layers and are painted from memory. I paint what I love. They are about my experiences in Philadelphia; in particular, streets and buildings that I came across on walks in Germantown, Fishtown and Kensington.
