Extend your foundational portrait drawing abilities in this class with a focus on aspects key to capturing the uniqueness and personality of your subject: facial expressions, intersections, movement and spatial relationships of forms, and small but revealing details. Learn about changes in the head and face that occur as we age as well as more subjective issues in portraiture such as viewpoint and focus. Challenging and rewarding weekly sketchbook assignments drawing from invention, photos and/or life will supplement and enhance in-class learning. Portrait Drawing from Photographs Part 1 or previous portrait/figure drawing experience recommended.

RA Friedman is a Philadelphia-based artist who has followed a career-long passion for the human figure’s ability to convey intimate and complex states of being. To that end, he recently completed an eight year endeavor working with the figure and pinhole photography.  Adept at photography, drawing, and re-crafting older technologies, his unique approach to creative inquiry involves the interplay between the objectivity of the camera and the subjectivity of the hand-made. His projects often reach out directly to the public as participants and creative partners.

Since June 2020, RA has been drawing memorial portraits of Philadelphians and other Americans lost to Covid-19 as part of The Covid-19 Portrait Project, USA. His unique approach to creative inquiry involves the interplay between the objectivity of the camera and the subjectivity of the hand-made. His projects often reach out directly to the public as participants and creative partners.
