Painting Clinic with Tom Csaszar
Painting Clinic with Tom Csaszar
Material Clarity: Place, Identity, and Resonance in Images and Works of Art
Are you stuck on a painting and don't know what to do? Bring a problem painting or two to this workshop and artist and educator Tom Csaszar will help you find a solution.
We will look at, discuss, and engage in viewing practices and studio practices that allow a maker and a viewer to enter the situation of the work: its emotions and its narratives. Through material and image an artist speaks as one is of places, people, and events. These aspects of the world are intertwined and presented directly—at moments even awkwardly—allowing through this the maker/viewer to speak with and back to the materials and the image.
Come prepared during the first half of the day to view and discuss two to five of your works in any media and engage how the material, narratives, and evoked feelings of a picture’s event offer layers of meanings. We will first view and discuss the works in the current exhibit in relation to the theme of place and person, and then proceed to discuss the works brought in by the participants.
During the second half of the class each one of us will develop further works in relation to how this process leads to either revise the elements of another work in relation to the ones discussed, or make another work in response to the ones reviewed. This studio practice will allow us to freely examine the making of works in conversation with responses to how events take place in an image, in ways differing but related for each of us.
All participants should bring two to five works, and bring materials of their choice to make works in the second half of the day. Ideal for painters of all levels in all media including oil, acrylic, watercolor, and gouache.
