A Day in the Life

Cerulean Arts is pleased to present A Day in the Life featuring drawings and paintings by Gary Grissom and Louise Vinueza.  Gary Grissom’s work chronicles his family life and features biographical references, family members and the landscape environment near his Philadelphia home.  An obsession with patterning, surface detail and color variation is evident and harkens back to the abstract grid structure paintings he made in the 1970s.  He hopes his representational work is seen from the tradition to render, what the artist Faith Ringgold called, “painting the world as it really is”.  Louise Vinueza’s small-scale oil paintings have a dream-like and nostalgic quality influenced by a lifetime of experiences. Often described as haunting, mysterious and sometimes humorous, her work shifts from reality to fantasy, and this affinity to Magic Realism connects her to her Latin American heritage. With a nuanced color palette, thick paint and energetic gestures reflective of her emotional state, she is often surprised in the end by an image that is totally unfamiliar to her.
