A Starling in Shadow

The idea for this exhibition is inspired by the concurrent two-venue exhibition selected by Laurel McLaughlin and Mechella Yezernitskaya at Bryn Mawr College (where they are students) and PAFA.  Their exhibition includes some of the works from a community-based art project with which I was deeply involved twenty-six years ago.  Revisiting that earlier project through their curatorial work served as a springboard in planning this group exhibition -- the fourth I have organized with Tina Rocha and Michael Kowbuz at Cerulean Arts.  I have known all but two of the artists represented in this show. I worked with several of them while they were students and attended art school with others who are closer to my age.  Two of the artists who are a generation older than me were heroes of mine when I was a student.  While organizing this I reconnected with someone I first met when I was about eight years old but with whom I'd later lost touch.  After not seeing her for the past 45 years it was a delight to learn she has been painting the whole time.  I've titled the exhibition after Julie Zahn's, A Starling In Shadow, because it is the most poetic way to state -- whether known nationally or recognized primarily within their own communities -- that all these artists deserve to have a brighter light shining on their work.           -- Bill Scott
