“bread for all, and roses too” -- Helen Todd (American Suffragist and Labor Activist)
In the Bread and Roses Strike of 1912, mostly women workers walked out of the textile mills in Lawrence, Massachusetts for the human right to afford both bread and roses with wages paid for their labor.
It is well known that many artists work parallel careers to earn a stable living. Laboring in one or more fields including construction, cultural institutions, education, entertainment, health care, and the labor movement itself, these artists do meaningful work and also support their studio. As part of life, the labor struggle is reflected in (or hidden by) their artwork in myriad ways. Often, the very space to contemplate nature and the sublime is hard fought in our society we must survive in. It is a precious thing to have time to express the visceral yet delicate systems that surround and connect us in this world. Art itself, is the rose.
