Close at Hand

Cerulean Arts is pleased to present Close at Hand, featuring works by Sheila Chimes, Elizabeth Heller and Ed Kent. For each artist, everyday objects serve as inspiration. The household objects in Shelia Chimes’ oil paintings - tools, fasteners, bits of string – seem as if they were randomly tossed across a blank surface then painted. In reality, the works are thoughtfully composed, guiding the viewer to spend time with things that normally wouldn’t get a second glance. Elizabeth Heller’s still lives feature more personal items: glass vases, patterned fabrics, houseplants and, at times, her own sculptures. Carefully arranged and painted, one is invited to move through her compositions, one object to another and back again, while savoring the forms, color and brushwork. Ed Kent’s assemblages incorporate a myriad of small mechanical, electrical and other found components. Removed from their original function and recast into a new context, often unified by color, they are both fascinating and curious.
