Depths of Mind and Memory

Cerulean Arts presents Depths of Mind and Memory featuring paintings by Philippa Beardsley and E.J. O’Hara.  Both artists work in layers of representation and abstraction from different directions and aims.  Beardsley creates her acrylic and mixed media paintings from memory, based on her experiences with architecture walking through the Fishtown and Kensington neighborhoods of Philadelphia.  Working in gestural layers on cigar and other box forms, her work has a sculptural quality.  She works on many at the same time and enjoys arranging them in different combinations, desiring for them to work together as a group and as stand-alone paintings.  Based in New York, with close ties to Philadelphia, O’Hara creates abstract paintings out of tangible items – especially things that grow.  With a background in printmaking, O’Hara works with multiple media in layers including acrylic paint, spray paint, color pencil, and Xerox transfer.  Much of his work has been preoccupied with the history of plant symbolism and how it breaks down in a postmodern age.  Often using borrowed imagery, he manipulates and combines it with the personal to generate new meaning.
