Elemental

Cerulean Arts is pleased to present Elemental, an exhibition focused on the classical elements of earth, fire, water and air, as seen in a contemporary context.  Inspired by geomorphology, Heather McMordie uses printmaking to explore the complexities of soil systems.  Often recycling and combining her drawings and prints, she slowly re-shapes them, just as nature continually erodes and renews.  Kellyann Monaghan’s expressive paintings are a personal, visceral response to our current world.  Fire and ephemeral smoke are depicted and transformed through the physicality of paint and brushstrokes.  Her lush and beautiful surfaces contrast with the destructive events depicted. For Peter Quarracino, the texture and consistency of oil paint enables him to express water’s fluidity, movement, depth of color, light and reflections.  The absence of landscape context immerses the viewer into the painting’s fluid space.  Michael Rossman’s graphite drawings of storms reflect his observation and awe in the face of atmospheric conditions that are both destructive and restorative.  The subject gives way to a layered density of marks, revealing the formal complexity and kinetic energy released when opposing forces collide.
