Cerulean Arts is pleased to present Intrigues and Intimations featuring paintings by Tom Csaszar and sculptures by Matthew Courtney. In Csaszar’s evocatively titled oil on linen paintings, referential and abstract objects intermingle among shapes, tones and textures to unfold a narrative. He provides just enough familiarity and freedom for the viewer to enter the realm of the work itself and turn it into an experience rather than an objective statement of fact. In a similar vein, Courtney distorts, alters, and combines familiar imagery in his ceramic sculptures, asking the viewer to suspend disbelief and enter a strange and humorous world of camels, birds, and baseballs. He mixes his love of sports and popular culture with a deep knowledge of the history of art in a playfully transgressive approach to the medium of clay.
