Kyoko Miyabe

Rilke once referred to "a steady inner core, which seeks to preserve its position and strength in the face of everything.” Exploring a visual language that can give form to this inner core has been the impetus behind my recent art, which is represented through two bodies of work in this show. One body comprises images created through an engagement with Celia Bland’s poetry. The other consists of acrylic paintings that began with studies of the angel drawings that Paul Klee made before his death, during times of unimaginable public and personal instability. The attempt underlying these two bodies of work is twofold: to answer the question of what abstract art can offer during these socially, politically, and ecologically fraught times; and to engender images of vitality and vulnerability, using organic shapes situated within an indeterminate pictorial space, and more recently, incorporating Japanese design patterns symbolizing renewal, protection, and prayer for peace.
