Kyoko Miyabe

Kyoko Miyabe The current show results from translating, assembling, and improvising on the visual elements embodied in two artists' work: Maria Helena Vieira da Silva's Composition (1936-1937) and Paul Klee's Eidola drawings (1940).
Vieira da Silva's painting offers a sense of kinship through its image -- an earthy mound shape, consisting of rectangular and triangular pieces, strung together in the form of maze-like spiral passages -- as well as through the artist's adherence to her visual language during turbulent and uncertain times. The accompanying wall text for Composition, which is at the Art Institute of Chicago states: "Vieira da Silva insisted on the merits of abstraction even as the political situation in 1930s France seemed to demand art with a clear political message."
Similarly, Klee continued to develop his own visual language while facing the rise of fascism as well as his own mortality, suffering from an incurable illness that led to his death in 1940. In the catalog for a recent exhibition of his late works, Mason Klein writes: "The word [Eidola] derives from the Ancient Greek Eidolon; it refers to a ghost or apparition, men and women in a shadowy realm between life and death, whose earthly occupations and attributes remain recognizable."
The works displayed here are my attempt to emulate their creative process, striving toward something that is one's own, something that can offer nourishment not only for oneself but hopefully for others as well.
