Kyoko Miyabe

Rilke once referred to "a steady inner core, which seeks to preserve its position and strength in the face of everything.” Exploring a visual language that can give form to this inner core has been the impetus behind my art. The body of work presented in this exhibit originated from my engagement with the drawings Paul Klee made in the last few years of his life, Maria Lassnig’s Hospital (2005), Philip Guston’s late paintings as well as with kagami-ita (lit. mirror panel), the image of an old pine tree painted on the back panel of the stage in a Noh theater. The attempt underlying my work is twofold: to continue exploring what abstract art can offer during these socially, politically, and ecologically fraught times; and to engender images of vitality and vulnerability, using organic shapes situated within an indeterminate pictorial space, and more recently, incorporating Japanese design patterns symbolizing renewal, protection, and prayers for peace.
