Kyoko Miyabe

The works in the current show are in homage to a painting titled Composition (1936-1937) by Maria Helena Vieira da Silva (1908-1992). This painting left a strong impression on me when I saw it at the Art Institute of Chicago not only because of the visual experience it offered but also because of the wall text, which stated that "Vieira da Silva insisted on the merits of abstraction even as the political situation in 1930s Europe seemed to demand artworks with a clear political message." I felt a kinship with her as I have continued to make abstract work through our politically turbulent and uncertain times. In Vieira da Silva’s painting, small mostly rectangular and some triangular shapes, reminiscent of pottery shards or archaeological fragments, are strung together, creating maze-like spiral passages that collectively form a shape of an earthy mound. My paintings and drawings are translations and adaptations of her painting in whole or in parts.
