Scattering Light
I spend time walking in the evening searching for subtle changes in light and landscape colors for inspiration. I walk in natural surroundings and hope to find new material for painting in my photographs and sometimes painting on site. I love blending the colors of the sky into the landscape and I am inspired by abstract shapes and forms in atmospheric color. My home is on what was once a working farm and the old buildings are magical when they are illuminated by the moon or artificial light. There is a sense of history and time passing as day extends into evening around these structures. I stumbled on a scientific definition for what I love to paint and it is “Scattering Light”. A simple definition from various secondary sources I found is at sunrise or sunset, the sun is located near the horizon of the Earth and light has to travel longer through the Earth’s atmosphere and when white sunlight falls on atmospheric particles, blue light scatters out to space while red light scatters less… I love following this atmospheric process in my paintings. The work in my show is from 2022 and 2023 and they chronicle my close to home adventures through the seasons of scattering light.
