Mary Powers-Holt

In my recent body of work, I explore the relationship between nature's serenity and the passage of time. Over the past year, I have painted the same local landscapes, capturing their transformations through the seasons and various light and weather conditions. This practice has allowed me to observe and document the subtle changes that occur in the environment. I appreciate how historical agricultural calendars recorded the cyclical nature of time and seasons in the past when we were all more connected to the land. A book I read for a book club, “The Forest Unseen, A Year’s Watch in Nature” by David George Haskell, was also an inspiration for me to observe a local area landscape more closely. 

My paintings and photographs reflect contemplation in the natural world. For this work I dedicated more time to painting outdoors to expand my perception of colors and atmosphere. By immersing myself in outdoor environments and silencing my inner dialogue I see the bigger picture, capturing the unconscious abstract forms and my internal landscape. The recurring image of sunlight filtering through winter trees, the changes in the woods canopy with the arrival of spring, and a significant celestial event such as the April 2024 solar eclipse all serve as markers of time. 

The stillness I encounter in nature and while I am painting becomes a way to explore how time feels suspended or altered. In my studio, I reinterpret my photos from walks and outdoor paintings to express a sense of timelessness and tranquility. Stillness of Nature and Time captures both the natural world’s progression through seasons and how time stands still for me when I am deeply engaged in painting outdoors or in the studio.
