Clouds and Ruins
While hiking in the woods, I notice human and spiritual presence in neglected ruins, where memories of those who are gone remain visible. As I continue along the trail, the tree canopy and clouds above highlight nature’s ongoing changes. In these moments, I think of you and wish you could see this beauty. When I walk in the field, I remember you mowing there, carefully cultivating the thistle to appear intentional as if it was not a weed at all and waiting until it flowered and I could paint it before cutting it down. I also recall corn planted in front of the porch so deer would not come close to eat it.
“Clouds and Ruins” is not a planned series of paintings but an adjacent theme in my recent work. Painting some of the same landscapes and skycapes over the years marks time, as I see the changes from year to year in my paintings. For example, my painting, “July Thistle,” is my third rendition of the same evening view, each time capturing a different mood. I spend some time painting on site and also use photos from my walks and hikes for compositions and ideas in my painting studio. My goal is to capture the mood, color and light in these moments. Finding the same ruins in the woods nineteen years later is a reminder of what was happening in my own life the first time we stumbled upon them on a hike. Painting them again allows me to contemplate a different approach to a mosaic of rocks and structure. Similarly, the discovery of an abandoned quarry behind a massive fence fuels my curiosity about this untouched place. Why was it closed, and how does being off limits preserve its beauty? Learning more about the history and stumbling on news stories and videos about this place captures my imagination.
While I did not plan this exhibit for my late husband, Ken Holt, he lived in this place with me and saw the same field, ruins, and overgrown weeds in the gardens as I did, finding magic in them. I want to dedicate this exhibit of my work to his memory .
