Monica Kane
My work is an ongoing experiment in materials and processes, where metal, paper, ink, watercolor, and found objects converge. Through welding, collage, painting and drawing, I explore the interplay between form, texture, and meaning, creating works that speak to both the resilience and fragility of life.
At the core of my practice are themes of journey, migration, and the search for home. Boats, as symbols of travel and transition, appear throughout my work, embodying the delicate balance between movement and stability. They represent both a literal and metaphorical journey—a vessel through uncertain waters, searching for safe passage and belonging. This imagery underscores the transient nature of identity and place, evoking the vulnerability of those who navigate shifting landscapes, whether physical or emotional.
The materials I use are integral to this narrative. Metal stands for endurance and the weight of the journey, while paper and ink convey the fragility of human experience. Watercolor introduces fluidity, representing both the calm and turbulence that come with migration, while assemblage brings discarded elements together to form new meaning, mirroring the ways in which we rebuild our sense of self. Drawing anchors these concepts, grounding them in marks that are both spontaneous and deliberate.
Through my work, I invite the viewer to reflect on their own sense of movement, home, and belonging. The boat—whether it’s a constructed form or a fleeting image—serves as a reminder of the constant flux of life and the courage required to navigate its uncertain waters.
