Monica Kane

Beginning with sheet metal, my sculptures are assemblages of combined elements which I compose and then weld together. Working with steel, brass and copper— I cut, bend, and shape the metals. Surface patinas are created intentionally or as a result of the fabrication process. While the pieces are contemporary, their soft luster and burnished metallic tones suggest a connection to some ancient history. Leafless tree branches growing through the boats' floors seem to hoist them into the air. In my accompanying paintings on paper, atmospheric washes of color run freely. Spontaneous drawing in charcoal, graphite, and ink suggest boat forms which float across the paper on water or air. I carry forward the boat imagery as themes of migration from my previous works, which speaks to a current and pervasive sense of dislocation; a weaving together of fact and mythology in an attempt to reflect our consciousness, experience, and history.
