Aqua Utopia in Mexico
Regarding the inspiration for these paintings, I went to two resorts in Xcaret near Playa del Carmen in Mexico. The resorts where I stayed were by a saltwater river clean enough to swim in that emptied into Caribbean Sea right next to the Gulf of Mexico. At the resorts were multiple pools of different color water featuring unique structures. The pools ranged from infinity pools to pools that had swim up wet bars. Some pools and rivers were attached to hotels with swim up suites that lined the water. Some guests were lucky enough to have a balcony along the river from which you could jump right into the deep water.
Staying at the resorts, I had complimentary access to multiple eco water parks. I found myself swimming through underground rivers, ziplining into cenotes, and participating in underwater activities like a sea trek with dolphins and underwater sculptures, and “snuba” in the black cenote, which is a cross between scuba diving and snorkeling. I explored many types of cenotes from underground cenotes to above ground cenotes. I even went to a spa with a variety of beautiful pools.
