Pia De Girolamo

Pia DeGirolamo

My current series of acrylic paintings on canvas and panel portrays abstracted figures in motion and at rest. The models are family and friends. Paintings range from large wall sized work to smaller, intimate pieces.
I use colors that correspond with the feeling I get from the subject, for example warm colors for an outgoing person, cool or muted colors for a more reserved individual. Backgrounds can be solid and reflective of the personality of the model or based on the subject’ surroundings.
In my prior landscape-based work, the human form rarely made an appearance. After two years of confinement due to the COVID pandemic, reconnecting with family and friends rekindled the strong impulse to paint the people I cherish. In addition, I found myself drawn to figures in action which convey joy, energy and intensity, which is the opposite of what I experienced during the pandemic lockdown. That said, I also painted some of my models at rest, gazing at the seashore or sitting composed in a chair. Action and contemplation are both necessary for a balanced life. This series represents my first exhibition of figurative paintings but it is rendered in the same abstracted manner I used for earlier work.
One of the earliest trips we took after the pandemic was to St. Lucia, where I learned to paddle board. I painted several paintings of a paddleboarding figure as well as producing a linocut. The work took off from there, with paintings of figures running, dancing, wakeboarding, fishing, hiking and more culminating in this series, entitled Bodies in Motion and Sometimes at Rest.
