Robert Lipartito

I'm often surprised when people describe my work as "impressionist." My technique does share elements with that tradition—an attention to light, visible brushwork, thick impasto, an atmospheric approach to subject matter—but that only partly captures what concerns me most while painting. My palette tends to be more restrained, and often darker, than the typical impressionist range. More importantly, I rely heavily on chiaroscuro: strong contrasts of light and shadow that model form and delineate structure in ways that lean toward what I think of as abstract realism.
That interplay of light and dark gives rise to structural motifs that recur throughout my work—whether by intention or by discovery in retrospect. Triangular shadows, fragments of sky, architectural forms like bridges and arches: these appear again and again in my compositions, most pronounced in my Convento do Carmo and Kasha-Katuwe series, where I leaned more deliberately into abstract shape. But even in my more traditional landscapes and still lifes, the same elements are at work.
What I want viewers to feel is the weight of that contrast—not just light against dark, but the solid against the dissolving, the defined against the suggested. That tension is what the work is about.
