Ruth WolfI had to clear my head 

This group of paintings deals with separation, boundaries, barriers and finding connection. I painted “Silhouettes in Blue” soon after the 2024 election. I had to clear my head from all their noise and hate. I had to find rapport.
I then painted “Cassandra”. In Greek Mythology Cassandra was a prophetess. Apollo loved her and gave her a gift – the ability to foretell the future. But she refused his love and Apollo, not being able to take back his gift, made it so that no one would believe her. Yet her prophecies were always proved true by the events that subsequently transpired. I wanted the canvas to be gritty and raw. I put ash into the acrylic medium and primed the area within the frame. The edges of the frame echo the edges of the stretcher bars. This is my reference to the painting being a separate object in my environment, to its thingness. The delineated frame sets up a boundary between the reality inside, in the picture plane, and the reality outside the frame.
“W T F” , I do not know if there is more insanity outside the picture plane or inside the painted arena. I just keep painting.
I painted “Forsaken” about Gitmo. I returned to it. It seems even more relevant today.
Fireplace charcoal – “Tell me MORE” and the 12” x 12” canvases are studies using pieces of charred branches taken from the fireplace. This charcoal is very different from artist refined charcoal. Mostly, it is its variability. It can change unpredictably from extreme crumbly softness to hard unburnt wood in the same stroke. And then there is the process of having it adhere to the surface of the canvas. Again, this process references object, thing. Then, if all goes “right” this thing becomes art.
