Sean Hildreth

Sean Hildreth during his exhibition at Cerulean ArtsThis new series of paintings and prints focuses on the visual motifs of windows. Motivated by metaphors like peering through the windows of other’s experiences, this group of work presents views that look out on celebrations of color and organic paint flows. Contrasting these parties of light with grey toned marbled paper, is my attempt of visually grappling with the notion of people claiming, that “they don’t see color” as a tactic to reassure others they aren’t racist.
By holding onto declarations such as these, these individuals miss out on the diversity of life experiences, identities and journeys of folks who are different from them. Choosing to rather exist in a limited space of understanding. These frozen stone interiors depict, one way window watching, where painted representations for celebration of diversity and identities exist beyond comprehension and inclusion, just out of reach for full participation. But close enough to view in judgement.
Some of these paintings reverse this idea of willful ignorance towards other’s, by showing the views into the childhood home of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. In these windows and doorways viewers will find fluid remnants of marbled paper that can signify the freedom of open skies (dreams for the future), or the steady lapping of waves on shore (endless marching). These symbolic glimpses into the spaces/rooms where concepts of equality and freedom for all filled the air, counter the fixed mindsets of entombed grey interiors founded on prejudice and discrimination.
