Sphinx and Samurai
Sphinx and Samurai
Sherif Habashi and Hiro Sakaguchi
September 30 - October 25, 2026
Opening Reception: Saturday, October 3, 2-5pm
Cerulean Arts is pleased to announce the exhibition Sphinx and Samurai, paintings and works on paper by Sherif Habashi and Hiro Sakaguchi. The show explores themes of history, memory, and the contemporary world through amalgamations of personal narratives and reflections on the immediate and greater environments.
Sakaguchi creates fictive worlds excavated from his childhood memory of Japan and reanimated into highly complex compositions that function as commentaries on the present social, cultural, and geological realities that confront him. Habashi's current body of abstractions, dominated by expressionistic form and sporadic figurations, bears a discrete record of the accidental mark layered with the intentional, as mediations reconciling
the past with the present.
Over the years, works by both artists have been included in numerous shows, but the exhibition Sphinx and Samurai is the first to solely focus on the two artists and their parallel transplant history.
