Cerulean Arts is pleased to present Ten Thousand Storms: Part Two, featuring drawings by Michael Rossman. Continuing a theme that has challenged the artist for decades, these works emerged from Rossman’s travels to unfamiliar places where he was an observer of atmospheric conditions that are both destructive and restorative. Small scale studies give way to large-scale works in circular formats, alluding to the imposing, ominous, presence of nature’s scale. Experimenting with previously unfamiliar materials and tools, the subject of the storm gives way to a layered density of marks, revealing the formal complexity and the kinetic energy released when opposing forces collide. Rossman’s search for a calligraphy to satisfactorily explain the momentum and endurance of natural forces is an ever-elusive goal for him, but also defines the compelling challenge of the theme. The inclusion of earlier works of former themes offers clues to impulses which drive the current works. Rossman feels the viewer may witness the incompleteness of his efforts and uncertainty of what will come next, but hopes that they will also see the sincere, workman-like attempt of an artist aware of his limitations and maturing his gaze.
