Tilda Mann: Dispatches
“Do you like to write?’
“Oh, yes, I love to write!”
“What do you like to write about?”
“Oh, I don’t know. I just like to make the letters.”
-- Tilda Crispi, age 7, in conversation with Lucy Confortes, age 70.
Only a little has changed over time. My interest in narrative has grown, or perhaps more accurately, life experience has given me a little more to say. What’s remained the same is my impulse toward the calligraphic mark – the scribble, the line, evidence of the artist’s hand. Pattern and color have also grown in fascination for me. In this body of work I have opened up the field from strictly oil painting to more works on paper and collage, allowing for more play, more spontaneity, and more abandon. The marks demanded it.
