Oil Painting Basics with Shushana Rucker

This course will introduce students to the basics of oil painting. Students will learn how to handle materials, mix colors, and build a painting from start to finish. The tools and processes covered are adaptable for use in a home studio setup. Techniques will include color mixing, brushwork, layering, and basic surface preparation. Students will work from simple observation and/or reference while developing an understanding of value and composition.

Shushana Rucker is a Philadelphia-based painter and printmaker whose work investigates architecture, landscape, and connection. She earned her MFA from the University of Delaware and a Certificate from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Her work has been widely exhibited, and she has been the recipient of numerous awards including a 2022 New Jersey State Council on the Arts Fellowship. Rucker is also an avid arts educator with over 20 years of experience teaching all age levels.
