Time Passages
Cerulean Arts is pleased to present Time Passages, featuring city landscape paintings by Michael Kowbuz and Allison Syvertsen. Syvertsen depicts her rapidly changing neighborhood through small-scale gouache paintings, based on a series of drawings made on location over time. Rooftops, backyards and streets are simplified into distinct color shapes locked together with careful perspective, illuminated under bright skies. Rather than capturing the immediacy of the moment, Syvertsen looks back to former periods in her life or scenes that have since changed, attempting to unite past observation with present-day interpretation. The subjects of Kowbuz's watercolor and mixed media paintings arrive through his daily travels, when the aesthetic possibilities of ordinary places are suddenly made apparent. Kowbuz captures these fleeting moments through photographs and thoughtfully develops them through his painting. By allowing their essence to emerge over an extended time, he transforms mundane views of parking lots, car windows and reflective storefronts into something majestic and strange.
